As those who know me will tell you, I am constantly excited and passionate about new endeavours. For instance, I will make it my mission in life to make the perfect coffee, the perfect cupcake or something as simple as the perfect hot chocolate with colourful whipped topping and sprinkles. There is nothing that makes me happier than sharing my yummy creations with friends and hearing their utterances of pleasure as they take that first sip or bite! Hours can pass in the kitchen day after day without stopping for a break to sit or eat.
On one occasion, I managed to pull off a delicious chocolate fudge brownie with ice cream, homemade whipped topping and chocolate drizzle. My son told me that it was the best thing that he’d ever tasted and requests this treat every now and again, telling me that I should open my own café where I could make everyone’s tummies happy. Though I do dream of someday having my own business (which alternates in my mind between a coffee shop, a yoga studio, a counselling practice and now inspiring creatively designed products), my daydreams of that eventuality are often followed by self-doubt. A friend of mine tells me that this is what is known as imposter syndrome. Who do you think you are? Do you know how many people are out there doing this very thing with greater qualifications?
Recently, I told my son that I was trying to learn more about the various social media platforms so that I could spread the news of my blog to more of you lovely serenity seekers. He told me that I should start a YouTube channel. I replied to him stating that I had absolutely no idea where I would start. I can’t start a YouTube channel?! Or can I? My nine year old son didn’t see any reason why not!
As adults, we’re great at making excuses for not making our own dreams come true. I read a great book by Wayne Dyer called Excuses Begone! I was a little put off until I started to hear myself making excuses all of the time about why I couldn't do what I wanted to do. I would tell myself that I should wait until I complete more schooling, make enough money in case I fail, or continue to do something more practical so that I wouldn't let my family down. We might think that my nine year old is naïve in thinking that anyone can do anything. However, there is something absolutely beautiful about his innocence that we unfortunately lose as we get older unless we’re lucky enough to remain wide awake to life’s limitless potential. We might tell ourselves that we’re not thin and fit enough to teach yoga! Serene enough to teach meditation. Our voice doesn't sound soothing enough to teach like a successful meditation teacher does, does it? Yet, if these are the things that make your heart sing and you feel so passionate about them that the hours can tick by without you noticing (like when you first fall in love and you stay up all night just to talk; your tummy no longer crying in hunger and your body no longer seeming to need sleep), then should this not be the path that you follow? Should you not start taking the steps that you need to in order to make all of your dreams a reality? We only have this one life to live as this individual.
As I often tell my son - There is only one you in this entire universe! Only one you with these particular gifts! What are you going to do with them? Who are you going to be? Because the beauty is, you get to choose! You are right, there are others out there probably doing what seems to be the same thing. However, the amazing thing about this time to be alive is that the world is wide open and opportunities are everywhere for the taking. They may be making similar products - but no one has your vision with your experience and your message! So let's hear it! What do you need the world to know? Imagine if Mother Theresa, Oprah Winfrey, Steve Jobs, Brené Brown, J.K. Rowling or Thomas Edison had dared to let their self-doubt stop them from doing what the knew deep in their soul that they had to do?
What dreams are you going to make come true? Your intuition knows what they are - now get out there and share them with the world! Show us your sparkle!
